Councilmember

Tyler Kandel and his wife, Stephanie have lived in Metuchen since 2001 since moving here from Manhattan, and rented an apartment on New Street over what is now Sushi Suzuki. They moved to Home Street in 2003, and then to Beacon Hill Drive in 2019. They have two daughters.

Tyler is an attorney who specializes in commercial litigation. He has been practicing law since 1995, and currently is a Partner of the law firm of Sherman Atlas Sylvester & Stamelman LLP, which is primarily based in Florham Park. Stephanie is a Kindergarten teacher at Moss School in Metuchen.

Tyler has been actively involved with the Metuchen community as a volunteer for well over a decade. Beginning in 2010, he was appointed as a member of the Mayor’s Commission to Study Full-Day Kindergarten, which resulted in the lengthening of each half day of kindergarten.

From 2011-2019, he was the head coach or assistant coach of at least 30 rec softball, basketball, soccer and flag football teams, and served as the Commissioner of several softball divisions of the Metuchen Baseball and Softball League.

In 2014, he founded what is now called the Metuchen Daddy-Daughter Events Group, which holds annual snow tubing events for hundreds of Metuchen residents, and raised tens of thousands of dollars for charity. He is also a proud member of the local musical group, “The Commuters,” which has played at events throughout the Borough for charitable purposes.

From 2016-2020, he served as an Alternate on the Metuchen Zoning Board of Adjustments.

Since being elected as Metuchen Borough Councilmember in 2021, Tyler has served as Liaison to the Metuchen Recreation Commission, the Historic Preservation Commission, the Metuchen Fire Department and the Emergency Management Committee.  He has also been integrally involved in several major issues that concern the health, safety and vitality of the Borough, including the building of the new Emergency Management Center and the implementation of the sale and distribution of legalized cannabis within the Borough.
