DESCRIPTION:The Cooper Union’s 2017 John Jay Iselin Memorial Lecture\, which is free and open to the public\, will feature former United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara.\nThis is sold out due to overwhelming demand.\nMr. Bharara oversaw the investigation and litigation of all criminal and civil cases brought on behalf of the United States in the Southern District of New York. Under his leadership\, the office experienced one of the most productive periods in its history. Known for being at the forefront of prosecuting financial misconduct including securities fraud and insider trading\, this record of rooting out fraud earned Bharara the nickname “Sheriff of Wall Street” according to ABC News.\nIn addition to helping secure convictions of numerous insider trading defendants\, his office brought a number of significant civil actions alleging financial and healthcare fraud and collected hundreds of millions of dollars in settlements\, including from Deutsche Bank\, CitiMortgage and Bank of America for fraud relating to faulty lending practices. His office also held to account several of the world’s largest corporations for their misconduct\, including JP Morgan Chase for its relationship with Madoff Securities. Under Mr. Bharara’s supervision\, the office brought a series of significant and systemically revelatory public corruption cases against members of New York City and State governments. Furthermore\, the office continued its traditional civil rights work by\, for example\, conducting a multi-year investigation into the treatment of adolescent males at Rikers Island.\nMr. Bharara graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College with an A.B. in Government in 1990\, and from Columbia Law School with a J.D. in 1993\, where he was a member of the Columbia Law Review.

This date was chosen because it’s the day George Orwell’s protagonist Winston Smith begins rebelling against his oppressive government by keeping a forbidden diary. These theaters owners also strongly believe in supporting the National Endowment for the Arts and see any attempt to scuttle that program as an attack on free speech and creative expression through entertainment. This event provides a chance for communities around the country to show their unity and have their voices heard.

DESCRIPTION:Over the past several months\, we’ve seen a tremendous surge in grassroots political action opposing the destructive policies of the Trump administration. From the historical Women’s March in Washington\, DC to the airport protests that helped push back on Trump’s anti-Muslim travel ban\, ordinary people are demonstrating an extraordinary willingness to fight back.\nBut defeating the right-wing’s bigoted\, anti-worker agenda will require more than defensive action. The Left must also put forward a positive\, alternative vision with bold demands that can unite working people in struggle for a better future.\nThe demand for a $15/hour minimum wage is one part of that broad program.\nLast year when NJ legislators proposed carve-outs that would have disproportionately impacted women\, immigrant workers and people of color\, our movement answered them with a swift and decisive NO. Our United We Rise community initiative is an opportunity for women from both of our memberships to meet in a social gathering with the goal of supporting our American Muslim community. Because change happens locally\, these small group meet and greets will allow for true conversation and the building of bridges between members in the same community.  \nThis social gathering will happen at the ICPC Mosque at the Clifton Campus. There will be a bazaar after the meet and greet so bring some money in case you want to purchase any goods! We are working to get more places and dates around the state of New Jersey and those will be announced in the near future. Based on the success of this initiative\, we will work to scale it and launch it nationally between CAIR and ATN (Action Together Network) members.  \nWhat you can expect at these social gatherings: \n*Limited to women only. (We really are going to change our world!) \n*No pork products/gelatin and alcohol. Kosher products are fine. \nWhere: ICPC Clifton Campus\, ​257 Pershing Rd\, Clifton\, NJ 07013 \nCAIR is the largest Civil Rights Organization for American Muslims in USA with over 30 offices around the nation. CAIR is also the only National American Muslim Organization that has a MAJORITY female leadership. Our Board chairs and Executive Directors in 30 offices make up more than 60% of our leadership. Chair of both CAIR National and CAIR-NJ are female attorneys.
