SUMMARY:National Pride March
DESCRIPTION:NATIONAL PRIDE MARCH (NOW A GLOBAL MOVEMENT)\n\n“In Solidarity!”\nUpdate: The outreach and response to this March is staggering and inspiring. What started off as a proposed March in Washington\, DC on June 11th\, has quickly morphed into a national movement\, as well as a global one. Austin(TX)\, Portland(ME)\, Indianapolis(IN)\, Seattle (WA)\, Sydney (AU) are just a few of the cities who have announced solidarity marches. And there are MANY others who are in the initial planning stages around our country and the world.\nFor those who can not attend the March in DC\, we URGE all our community members\, their families\, friends\, and allies to reach out to their local Pride organizations to help coordinate additional solidarity marches. Use these organizations to help bring your local communities together. The issues that face our community are not just national\, but local as well.\nIn short time\, we will start linking all the pop-up solidarity marches to this main event page\, as well as a web page that will be created with more information on all the marches.\nLet’s make this truly a “National Pride March” that spreads from coast to coast and shows solidarity through our Pride movement. Although at the pace we are going\, we might have to change the name to the “Global Pride March!”

SUMMARY:March for Science
DESCRIPTION:The March for Science is a celebration of our passion for science and a call to support and safeguard the scientific community. Recent policy changes have caused heightened worry among scientists\, and the incredible and immediate outpouring of support has made clear that these concerns are also shared by hundreds of thousands of people around the world. The mischaracterization of science as a partisan issue\, which has given policymakers permission to reject overwhelming evidence\, is a critical and urgent matter. It is time for people who support scientific research and evidence-based policies to take a public stand and be counted. \nON APRIL 22\, 2017\, WE WALK OUT OF THE LAB AND INTO THE STREETS.\nWe are scientists and science enthusiasts. We come from all races\, all religions\, all gender identities\, all sexual orientations\, all abilities\, all socioeconomic backgrounds\, all political perspectives\, and all nationalities. Our diversity is our greatest strength: a wealth of opinions\, perspectives\, and ideas is critical for the scientific process. What unites us is a love of science\, and an insatiable curiosity. We all recognize that science is everywhere and affects everyone.

SUMMARY:March for Science - New Jersey Satellite March
DESCRIPTION:The Official Mission Statement of the New Jersey March for Science\nThe New Jersey March for Science affirms the guiding statement of the National March for Science (https://www.marchforscience.com/mission/):\n“The March for Science champions robustly funded and publicly\ncommunicated science as a pillar of human freedom and prosperity. We unite as a diverse\, nonpartisan group to call for science that upholds the common good and for political leaders and policy makers to enact evidence based policies in the public interest.”\nWe as scientists\, students\, teachers\, doctors\, engineers\, and concerned citizens have chosen to March for Science to bring attention to important issues that we see as threatening the safety of our fellow citizens\, our state\, our national character\, and the endeavor of scientific exploration.\n-Fact-Based Policies: We demand that our leaders take into account the best available scientific evidence when making their decisions\, in particular in the areas of climate change\, healthcare\, energy policy\, public safety\, education\, and resource management. We reject attempts to silence the voices bringing attention to scientific evidence of the serious problems faced by our society\, and we reject politically-motivated attacks on scientific research in any field.\n-Free Inquiry: As scientific study requires open exchange of ideas and free association across ethnic\, religious\, and national lines\, we demand that the right to speech\, travel\, and association be protected to the fullest extent\, in keeping with the highest ideals and traditions of the United States. Beyond the damage done to our nation’s scientific and economic output\, such policies are violations of our human rights\, and should be opposed regardless of their impact on science.\n-Education: We demand that public education be protected and strengthened\, to provide for our next generation of scientists\, engineers\, and innovators\, as well as for our future artists\, writers\, and musicians\, whose contributions are equally critical for a healthy democracy. The lack of quality education for all American children robs them of opportunities and deprives all of us of the fruits of their talents.\nFor these reasons\, we have chosen to March for Science. We march so that scientific evidence will be taken seriously. We march because our friends and colleagues are being targeted unjustly. We march because we are concerned about the next generation. We hope you will join us on April 22\, in Trenton\, in DC\, or elsewhere. And we hope you will join us afterwards\, for all the work that needs to be done.\n*The organizers of the New Jersey March for Science are volunteers and are not being compensated in any manner for their time and dedication to this event. SUMMARY:Solo Art Exhibit: You Think You Know Me
DESCRIPTION:Transgender visual artist\, Tegan James of Metuchen\, will hold his first solo art show in an unconventional gallery setting. The show will be held at The Gallery at What’s New Men’s Consignment store on Main Street in Metuchen.\nThe theme of the show\, titled ‘You Think You Know Me’ relates to the LGBTQ community\, with a heavy focus on the topics of being transgender and the gender spectrum. Twelve paintings of acrylic on canvas have been selected for this show. Their sizes range from 16×20” to over 4’ feet tall.\n“It’s important that I use this opportunity to bring awareness to the transgender community\, not only to give a voice to myself and my own journey\, but also to be a voice for those out there who still feel lost\, scared or uncertain. It wasn’t until I was 36 years old that I discovered what was right with me\, and I wouldn’t have known if others weren’t out there sharing their stories too.”\nDetails: No cover charge; light refreshments

SUMMARY:Lecture by Preet Bharara
DESCRIPTION:The Cooper Union’s 2017 John Jay Iselin Memorial Lecture\, which is free and open to the public\, will feature former United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara.\nThis is sold out due to overwhelming demand.\nMr. Bharara oversaw the investigation and litigation of all criminal and civil cases brought on behalf of the United States in the Southern District of New York. Under his leadership\, the office experienced one of the most productive periods in its history. Known for being at the forefront of prosecuting financial misconduct including securities fraud and insider trading\, this record of rooting out fraud earned Bharara the nickname “Sheriff of Wall Street” according to ABC News.\nIn addition to helping secure convictions of numerous insider trading defendants\, his office brought a number of significant civil actions alleging financial and healthcare fraud and collected hundreds of millions of dollars in settlements\, including from Deutsche Bank\, CitiMortgage and Bank of America for fraud relating to faulty lending practices. His office also held to account several of the world’s largest corporations for their misconduct\, including JP Morgan Chase for its relationship with Madoff Securities. Under Mr. Bharara’s supervision\, the office brought a series of significant and systemically revelatory public corruption cases against members of New York City and State governments. Furthermore\, the office continued its traditional civil rights work by\, for example\, conducting a multi-year investigation into the treatment of adolescent males at Rikers Island.\nMr. Bharara graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College with an A.B. in Government in 1990\, and from Columbia Law School with a J.D. in 1993\, where he was a member of the Columbia Law Review.

SUMMARY:1984 National Screening Day
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, April 4\, 2017\n6:00 PM \n\nLincoln Center\n65 N Broadway\nAt 66th Street and Broadway\nNew York City\, NY (map)\nOn April 4\, 2017\, almost 90 art house movie theaters across the country in 79 cities and in 34 states\, plus one location in Canada\, will be participating collectively in a NATIONAL EVENT DAY screening of the 80’s movie 1984 starring John Hurt\, who sadly died last month. This date was chosen because it’s the day George Orwell’s protagonist Winston Smith begins rebelling against his oppressive government by keeping a forbidden diary. These theaters owners also strongly believe in supporting the National Endowment for the Arts and see any attempt to scuttle that program as an attack on free speech and creative expression through entertainment. This event provides a chance for communities around the country to show their unity and have their voices heard.

SUMMARY:Build the Movement for $15 NOW!
DESCRIPTION:Over the past several months\, we’ve seen a tremendous surge in grassroots political action opposing the destructive policies of the Trump administration. From the historical Women’s March in Washington\, DC to the airport protests that helped push back on Trump’s anti-Muslim travel ban\, ordinary people are demonstrating an extraordinary willingness to fight back.\nBut defeating the right-wing’s bigoted\, anti-worker agenda will require more than defensive action. The Left must also put forward a positive\, alternative vision with bold demands that can unite working people in struggle for a better future.\nThe demand for a $15/hour minimum wage is one part of that broad program.\nLast year when NJ legislators proposed carve-outs that would have disproportionately impacted women\, immigrant workers and people of color\, our movement answered them with a swift and decisive NO. That’s the kind of solidarity we’re going to need to stop Trump and his collaborators in their tracks.\nJoin us on April 1st to demand $15 for all workers: No racist\, sexist carve-outs! No exceptions for youth labor!\nEvent Co-Sponsors\n——————\nSocialist Alternative NJ\nGreen Party of NJ\nNJ Badass Teachers Association (BATS)\nIf your organization would like to co-sponsor the rally\, please email us at 15NowNJ@gmail.com
